Moving SocPub to Drupal Gardens

I'm in the middle of moving SocPub.com over to Drupal Gardens. If you're reading this post, you're already there! I'll give the details for the reasons why once the migration is complete.

Absorbing Enterprise 2.0

Enterprise 2.0 and social publishing sounds great in theory, but understanding how these technologies can be applied to your business or organization takes time to reflect. That's why I will be rereading Andrew McAfee's Enterprise 2.0 book. His book will be the source of topics for a number of posts to follow.

Enterprise 2.0: New Collaborative Tools for Your Organization's Toughest Challenges
By
Andrew McAfee

Enterprise 2.0 by Andrew McAfeeI waited for much of 2009 to see this book get published. This is the book for companies and organizations wrestling to understand the impact Web 2.0 and social media applications can have on their business. I had hoped to have read the book by now, but the holidays were too busy. You can expect that this will be the first book I'll review in 2010.

McAfee brings together case studies and examples with key concepts from economics, sociology, computer science, consumer psychology, and management studies and presents them all in a clear, accessible, and entertaining style. Enterprise 2.0 is a must-have resource for all C-suite executives seeking to make technology decisions that are simultaneously powerful, popular, and pragmatic.

Construction Slowdown

For better or for worse, I've chosen to build SocPub.com using Drupal 7. Drupal 7 is open source software currently still under development. To be honest, the software isn't quite ready for production sites which is slowing me down in getting this site ready for visitors.

Using an alpha version of any CMS for a production site is never recommended, but I have some personal reasons for why I want to do this. For starters, I currently don't have a goal to make SocPub a commercial site with the usual bells and whistles. I want this site to be a little more for academic discussions among my peers with the content not necessarily for mass consumption. Using software that is still in alpha stages of development is a good way to remind me to not go overboard in commercializing this site and keep things simple, wouldn't you say?

No doubt, there will be bumps in the road using these early versions of Drupal 7. However, I'm hoping the benefits outweigh the risks and gives me an opportunity to learn the unexpected and also give me some room to make forgivable mistakes. For example, installing Drupal 7 has allowed me to collect some screenshots of a Drupal 7 Alpha 1 install. I posted the below content earlier at CMS Report. I'm reposting the screenshots after the break to give you an example of how little I'm starting with to build this site. Don't worry, we'll be talking about social publishing soon enough.

CMS Report: Introducing SocPub.com

Until this developing website for SocPub proves itself to be stable, we'll be cross posting articles at this site and at CMS Report. Below is our official announcement of SocPub.com as it was posted earlier this week at CMS Report.

A couple years ago, Jeff Whatcott introduced to me the concept of a social publishing system. Within minutes after reading his article, I knew I wanted to expand further on his idea of social publishing and discuss the potential impact social publishing would have on content management systems. During this time period, Andrew McAfee was continuing to observe the emergence of Enterprise 2.0 into the normal day to day business world. From these two moments, I couldn't help myself from dreaming of the opportunities I had before me to learn more about social publishing and collaboration tools.

I have waited for almost two years for the right time to start a new website that focused on Enterprise 2.0 topics which were beyond the scope of CMSReport.com. Starting with the new year, I began to realize this is the right time to introduce a new site that focuses on social publishing and collaboration. Today, I want to introduce you to SocPub.com. At the time, there isn't much to see but I promise you the future is bright for this domain.

The new SocPub site is expected to complement the content found here at CMS Report. Personally, I'm personally excited to offer this new site as an alternative to my current sites. The biggest differentiation between CMSReport.com and SocPub.com will be that we won't be talking much about software at SocPub. CMS Report prides itself in helping our readers implement information systems with the right software tools that they need for day to day content management. With SocPub, I plan to go in a completely opposite direction and focus on the bigger picture of what is involved to really understand social publishing and implementing the collaboration tools correctly for your organization.

At this moment in time you

Hello World

Welcome to the SocPub. SocPub.com is my new site and a chance for the start of fresh ideas and new conversation.

Four years ago, CMSReport.com began with a fascination over content management systems and has grown to become a well recognized resource for CMS enthusiasts. Without intending it, CMS Report has become a nice side business for me due to our incredible followers as well as a sustainable revenue from our sponsors. Although I remain deeply committed to CMS Report, I am just now recognizing that I need to have a new personal challenge and a new hobby.

SocPub is not intended to look at past accomplishments but to look forward into the future for new personal rewards. This is the hope and this is the dream of everyone who has run a successful website and wishes they could do it all over again. Through the SocPup site we'll learn about social publishing and social networking. We're also going to take a hard and serious look at Enterprise 2.0 tools at our disposal. Let's look beyond the CMS/ECM software and begin to understand the impact these new social publishing and collaboration tools have on both society and today's business culture. If you love information systems then I have no doubt you're going to love some of the conversation that is about to take place here at SocPub.com.

I'm not exactly sure where we're going to go with this site and that is why we're going to have a lot of fun with SocPub. I hope you join me on this journey from the beginning because you only get one chance to say "Hello World" and actually have the whole world looking to see what comes next.
